How to Handicap Preseason Games Without Getting Burned
Preseason games are chaos. Starters do not play. Backups play. Coaches experiment. If you treat a preseason game like a regular-season game, you are betting on noise, not signal.

I worked on slot machines for 40 years. Bally, IGT, Aristocrat, Williams. Every machine has a PRNG (pseudo-random number generator) that determines outcomes. The PRNG is tested, certified, audited. It works.
But a PRNG is not truly random. It is deterministic. Feed it the same seed (starting value) twice, and you get the same sequence of outcomes twice. This is by design. Regulators want reproducibility. A malfunction can be diagnosed by replaying the sequence.
Sports betting is similar. Preseason games look like football, but they are not football. The randomness is higher because the stakes are lower. Coaches do not care about the outcome. They care about seeing what their third-string linebacker can do.
This destroys the signal.
What's Different in Preseason
In the regular season, every player is playing for their job. They are competing. In the preseason, half the team is fighting for a roster spot (and they are panicked), and half the team is getting rest (and they are rusty when they do play).
Coaches rotate players heavily. A backup might play one quarter and then sit for the rest of the game. A starter might play five minutes just to test out of an injury. The game flow is unpredictable.
Defenses do not have set schemes. They are trying new packages. The offense is running plays they just learned. The coordination is not there.
This is noise. Pure noise. The final score tells you almost nothing about how good the teams are.
The Betting Line
Sportsbooks know this. They set preseason lines that are much looser than regular-season lines. The spread might be plus-or-minus 3.5 points instead of plus-or-minus 7. The juice (vig) is higher, sometimes 110 or 120 instead of 110.
Why higher juice? Because preseason lines move like weather. One injury report and the line shifts. One depth chart change and the line shifts again. The book wants to protect against sharp action and also wants the juice to compensate for the extra movement.
Most casual bettors lose money on preseason because they use regular-season logic. They think, "Team A is better than Team B, so Team A will win." In preseason, Team A might be resting their starters and Team B might be desperate to prove something. Team B wins.
The Data Problem
You cannot use historical data to predict preseason games. The 2024 preseason is not predictive of the 2024 regular season. The teams are too different.
You have to look at who is playing. Is the starting QB playing? If not, the offense is probably 20% worse. Is the starting edge rusher playing? If not, the defense is probably 15% worse.
This requires real-time information. You have to know the injury reports, the depth charts, the coaching decisions. Most bettors do not have this level of detail.
What Works
Bet on teams with clear advantages that will not be disrupted by preseason noise. Examples:
- A team that lost its QB for the season but is playing against a team with a healthy QB. The gap is so large that even preseason chaos cannot hide it.
- A team that added a franchise-changing player (like a Saquon Barkley level back) and is showing them off in preseason. The advantage is real even if the game is preseason.
- A team with new coaching that is clearly superior to the opponent. Coaching advantage shows up immediately.
Do not bet on subtle differences. Do not bet on a team "showing more promise." Do not bet on close lines. The noise is too high.
The Exit Strategy
If you are betting preseason, set a loss limit and stick to it. Preseason is a filter. Smart bettors use preseason to identify edges for the regular season. They do not make money on preseason. They just use it to learn.
Casual bettors try to beat the preseason line and get destroyed. The sportsbooks have too much information, the games are too unpredictable, and the risk-reward is bad.
Wait for the regular season. The signal is clearer. The odds are fairer. Your edge is real.
