Why Table Game Variants Keep Multiplying Online

I ran a pit for thirty years. In 1994 we had three table games and one of them was 21. Today my grandson plays twelve versions of blackjack before breakfast. Here is the specific reason, drawn from one case I remember well.

In the summer of 2003, a young man from Shuffle Master walked into the executive office at the Mirage carrying a folder. Inside the folder was a game called Three Card Poker. He wanted a placement on the floor, a soft one, maybe two tables by the Baccarat pit. The stakes were that if it worked we kept it. If it did not we sent him home.

That meeting is the whole story of why your sportsbook app today has forty-three versions of blackjack.

The Meeting

Derek Webb had invented Three Card Poker in 1994. By 2003 it had been on Vegas floors for five years. It was doing fine. Derek, through Shuffle Master by this point, was not pitching the game. He was pitching the licensing arrangement. A fixed monthly fee per table. No revenue share. The whale of his pitch was this: the game had a side bet, Pair Plus, that the average player loved, that carried a house edge of about seven percent, and that nobody complained about.

My boss at the time, a sharp guy out of Atlantic City, looked at the hold numbers. Three Card Poker was making more per square foot than most of the blackjack pit. He took two tables. Inside a year he took four more.

Every variant that came after was a copy of that meeting. The Shuffle Master salesman changed names. The folder changed. The logic did not.

Why Variants Make Money

A table game variant earns on two levels. First, the core game edge. Second, the side bets. The core game edge on straight blackjack sits around 0.5 percent with basic strategy. The core edge on Spanish 21 is close. On Blackjack Switch, when played correctly, is close. Where the operator actually banks is the side bet layer. The 21+3 side bet on blackjack has an edge of roughly three percent. The Lucky Ladies side bet, close to 17 percent on some paytables. The Buster side bet on eights, north of ten.

The customer does not play the side bet every hand. But the customer plays it enough. And here is the piece the pit bosses understood thirty years ago and the online guys figured out ten years ago. If you put a side bet on the felt, the chips will come.

The Online Acceleration

Online, the marginal cost of a new variant is almost zero. You do not need a felt. You do not need a dealer. You do not need to train the pit. You need a software update. Evolution Gaming and Playtech can ship a new blackjack variant in a month. The regulatory approval is light compared to slots, because the core game is already approved and the variant is just a rule change plus a side bet table.

So the tables multiplied. Where a floor like the Mirage in 2003 had maybe four table game variants, a mid-tier online casino today runs twenty or more. Some examples:

  • Free Bet Blackjack, Geoff Hall, 2012
  • Blackjack Switch, Geoff Hall, 2000, arrived online in 2010
  • Pirate 21, a Spanish 21 reskin, mid-2010s
  • Infinite Blackjack, Evolution, 2018
  • Power Blackjack, Evolution, 2020
  • One-seat, multi-seat, live, RNG, side bet heavy, side bet light

Each new variant is a marginal acquisition tool. A player who is bored of standard blackjack might try Free Bet. A player who tried Free Bet might deposit for a session. The cost of that acquisition, measured against the operator's existing stack, is tiny.

The Case at the Heart of It

Back to the Mirage, August 2003. Six months after we took the Three Card Poker tables, the hold per table at Pair Plus was the highest in the pit. Higher than baccarat. Higher than roulette. My boss ordered four more tables. By 2005 we had eight. By 2007 every casino on the Strip had them. Derek Webb sold Prime Table Games to Scientific Games in 2011 for a number north of thirty million dollars, some of which was the back end of the licensing fees we had paid out of that pit over the years.

That was a single variant. That was one meeting, one folder, one side bet.

There are people in the online industry right now doing that meeting twelve times a week. That is the whole reason you open the live casino lobby and see a game called Lightning Blackjack that did not exist last year. A vendor walked into a room. A product guy ran the hold numbers. A risk team approved the paytable. A week later it was live in thirty jurisdictions.

The business did not get more creative over thirty years. It got faster at the same trick.

What It Tells Us

The multiplication of variants is not a response to player demand. It is a response to marginal cost. When adding a new product approached zero, the catalog expanded to fill the available space. Same business, new medium. The side bet is still the whole game. The comps still roll downhill. The house still wins.
